Movie Making in New Mexico
Hopefully New Mexico’s long dry spell of little or no movie production is over. The low budget production titled “Rx” is finishing up shooting in the Albuquerque area. Another lov budget pic “Living in Las Vegas” is scouting locations but will probably be doing most of its filming in Albuqerque. Several other low and medium budget pictures are in the scouting stage. “A Night in Old México” is rumored to be planning on shooting in Las Vegas, New Mexico, possibly in July. Recently, at a press conference held by Governor Richardson, it was revealed that a huge $70 million budget remake of “The Longest Yard” would begin production, “soon,” at the old state prison. For more information, contact your local union office!
Monsanto Up until last recently, Monsanto had promised that it would not press for Bush Administration approval for its genetically engineered (GE) wheat until Canadian regulatory officials were ready to approve the controversial crop. However, due to strong resistance to GE wheat from Canadian consumers and farmers, Monsanto has announced it may choose to break this vow, causing great concern inside the U.S. wheat industry. “If we introduce and the Canadians do not, that would make it easier for countries to continue to insist on buying from a country that is GM-free and it would give Canada a distinct marketing advantage,” said U.S. Wheat President Alan Tracy. Monsanto claims it has every right to do what it pleases. The bottom line is that Monsanto is desperate and believes that its friends in the White House have no qualms about forcing Frankenfoods down consumers’ throats—even if it means billions of dollars in export losses for hapless U.S. wheat farmers. http://www.organicconsumers.org/ge/forcewheat031904.cfm

Udall Announces Washington Interns Six college students from New Mexico will travel to Washington, D.C. this Summer for an internship in the office of U.S. Representative Tom Udall, D-N.M. Each semester and twice during the Summer, Udall invites college-age New Mexicans to apply for internships in his Washington, D.C. office, and in any of his state offices. During this time, the interns will have opportunities to work with Udall’s staff on administrative, legislative and press responsibilities. According to Udall, interns participate in a variety of activities and gain “valuable hands-on work experience.” In addition, the Washington, D.C. interns enjoy opportunities to attend Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill, informational briefings at the Library of Congress, as well as lectures by Supreme Court Justices, White House Cabinet members, and Members of Congress. This year’s Summer interns include: Francine Gonzales of Taos (UNM-Albuquerque), Kyle Henderson of Santa Fe (NMSU), Ryan Moore of Las Vegas (UNM-Albuquerque), Joshua Rainer of Rio Rancho (UNM-Albuquerque), Sherrick Roanhorse of Farmington (UNM-Albuquerque), and Rebecca Velarde of Albuquerque (College of William and Mary in Virginia). “These students are as diverse as New Mexico,” Udall said. “I encourage any student — regardless of his or her college major — to apply for a congressional internship. Exposure to this branch of government can enhance a student’s understanding of our democracy and broaden one’s perspective for the future.” Udall is a third-term Democrat representing New Mexico’s Third Congressional District. He serves on the Resources Committee, Small Business Committee, and Veterans Affairs Committee.
Springsteen Could Bruce Springsteen be plotting to
rain on the Republicans’ campaign parade? Besides getting out the vote, Springsteen hopes to provide “counterprogramming to the message the Republicans will be broadcasting,” says a source. A spokeswoman for Springsteen would only say, “There are no confirmed Bruce shows for 2004.”
