“US Is Bigger Threat Than Terror” - Survey Globalisation and the US pose a more serious threat to the world than war and terrorism, according to 52% or respondents to a recent BBC poll. Corruption came second on a list of the biggest problems facing the world, the survey of BBC viewers worldwide found. Conflicts - war and terrorism - ranked third, with 50%, followed by hunger, 49%, and climate change with 44%. BBC World asked 1,500 viewers of its news and international channel for the biggest problems in the world with 52% saying the US and globalization. BBC World Respondents from Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Australasia, ranked the power of the US and large corporations as the biggest worry (52.3%). BBC World’s head of research and planning Jeremy Nye said: “We were a little surprised that global superpowers and corruption were ranked top but we will track whether they are gaining from topical interest or are of greater long-term significance.” Wars and terrorism were ranked as the top concerns in Europe and the Middle East despite ranking third overall. Illiteracy was ranked sixth overall with 38% followed by nuclear proliferation, also 38%, and the persecution of minorities with 36%. Tram Technics Crash Course Some young men riding a tram late one night in the City of Cologne, Germany, apparently got interested in the technical details of the vehicle and triggered the emergency brake. The tram came to an abrupt stop. Fortunately nobody was injured, but the driver was angry and ordered the young men to leave the tram at the next stop. They obliged and left the waggon they were in - but entered another waggon of the tram. Here they discovered another, yet untried feature: the emergency door release. They activated it, but nothing happened, because the door mechanism has been designed to exert some pressure on the door while the tram is running. So the young men applied force, damaging a door glass in the operation, and lock the door panels swung open. One of the young men grasped one of the panels and, clinging to it, let himself be carried outside. In principle a whiff of fresh air is a good thing, but there are exceptions. When the door panels swung back, the courageous young man found himself locked out of the waggon, with no foothold to force them open again. The trams of Cologne use electric power, supplied through a wire above the tracks. The wire does not float freely, of course, but is suspended from poles, which therefore stand at regular intervals along the tracks. The courageous tram rider learned that the hard way, when he collided with one of them and was instantly killed.(darwinawards.com) “Check This Out” Buzzflash.com Liberal-progressive newsite that is updated several times a day. Enough is Too Much, Already! It’s time to reevaluate our involvement! Every day there are news reports about more deaths. Every night on TV there are photos of death and destruction. Why are we still there? We occupied this land, which we had to take by force, but it causes us nothing but trouble. Why are we still there? Many of our children go there and never come back. Why are we still there? Their government is unstable, and they have loopy leadership. Why are we still there? Many of their people are uncivilized. Why are we still there? The place is subject to natural disasters, which we are supposed to bail them out of. Why are we still there? There are more than 1000 religious sects, which we do not understand. Why are we still there? Their folkways, foods, and fads are unfathomable to ordinary Americans. Why are we still there? We can’t even secure the borders. Why are we still there? They are billions of dollars in debt and it will cost billions more to rebuild, which we can’t afford. Why are we still there? It is becoming clear...We Must Pull Out of California!!!! Río Arriba County Pet Licenses Required
– Río Arriba County is now enforcing their ordinance requiring all dogs and cats to have a county license. The Española Animal Shelter is working with the county to assist pet owners to meet this requirement. The annual licenses are available at the shelter during regular business hours seven days a week. Fees are $5 for an altered pet, $10 if unaltered. Fees for Senior Citizens (62 and older) are $2 for an altered pet, $5 if unaltered. Bring proof of rabies vaccination and spay/neuter surgery or you may obtain these services through the shelter’s clinic. To help combat the pet over-population problem and assist pet owners in getting their animals fixed, the Española Animal Shelter has the “Critter Fixer Fund”, which allows low-income pet owners to alter their pets for only a $10 co-payment. Pet owners are required by City and County law to purchase a breeder’s permit annually for any unaltered pet. These permits must be obtained from the city for $25 and county for $50 each year for any pet that is not fixed. State law also requires all pets to be vaccinated against Rabies. The shelter’s on-site clinic offers shots for only $7. Be a Responsible Pet Owner! Get your best friend licensed, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. Earth Friendly Labeling Lies Consumers are quickly learning that government oversight of product labeling is all too loosely regulated. To add to the already existing confusion, the Hudson Institute’s Center for Global Food Issues (CGFI), an agribusiness and biotech front group, has announced it will now be labeling qualifying products as “Earth Friendly”. This designation will be placed on genetically engineered foods and factory farmed meat and dairy products.. The corporate-funded CGFI claim they have a right to label products as such, given their “scientific” opinion that certain aspects of GE crops and densely packed feedlots are better for the environment than organic agriculture. http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/labels031904.cfm
